It is correct that the checkbox is only avaiable when running as admin. But I don't see why it should crash when you run FR as admin, since the ctx file is always used.
I'm afraid I can't help you much more. I've have never encountered this problem before, and I would need access to your computer to learn how to fix it.. :-(
